Special Notice: Wind Wildlife Technology Development and Innovation (TD&I)Date: March 25, 2019 The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) intends to release a request for proposals (RFP) during the Spring of 2019 in support of NREL's Technology Development and Innovation (TD&I) program to address wind-wildlife operational challenges. The goal of the TD&I project is to aid the development of wind-wildlife monitoring and mitigation technologies that will facilitate more efficient and cost-effective wind energy deployment across the United States. The subsequent subcontract(s) will support the advancement and validation of emerging technologies that detect and deter birds and bats from wind energy facilities as well as the advancement of our understanding of bat and eagle behavior and physiology for the purpose of advancing impact minimization technologies.Technology-focused projects will leverage the NREL's National Wind Technology Center (NWTC)
facilities and expertise to support technical development and validation.  Technologies in the low- to mid- technology readiness levels (TRLs) will be considered for this effort, with a focus on TRLs 3 through 5. This spans from proof of concept (TRL3) to laboratory scale system validation (TRL5). This TRL designation does not apply to projects investigating bird and bat behavior and physiology for the purpose of improving the efficacy of technological solutions or informing future technology development.  Full proposals will be evaluated on technical merit, feasibility and impact, partnership commitment, organizational solvency, and team readiness. The RFP will require a 20% cost share requirement on funds going to the Subcontractor(s).To express your interest in this project, please contact Acquisition Services Office Subcontract Administrator William Algiene at William.Algiene@nrel.gov.  NREL may then notify your firm once the RFP is posted.  For more information on the TD&I program, please see our website at: https://www.nrel.gov/wind/technology-development-innovation.html
