INDUSTRY DAY NOTIFICATION(9:00am • July 25, 2019 • Walter F. George Dam Power House)WALTER F. GEORGE LONG TERM RIPRAP REPAIRThe U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile District, will be conducting an industry day to inform contractors of the Walter F. George Riprap Repair. The Work to be performed under this contract consists of repairing the upstream armored face on two non-overflow earthen dikes at Walter F. George Dam on the Chattahoochee River. The non-overflow earthen dikes are located on the right (west - Alabama side) and left (east - Georgia side) overbank areas. The new armoring system will be placed on both the Alabama earthen dike and the Georgia earthen dike. Construction will be completed in three phases and staging areas are provided on both the Alabama and Georgia side. During the removal and placing of the new armor system, the contractor will not be allowed to penetrate the soil embankment.Phase I will include the removal of the existing riprap and installation of the
new armoring system from elevation 186.00 to elevation 190.00. To facilitate removal of the existing riprap without damaging the impervious embankment, the reservoir pool will be lowered to elevation 186.0 feet for 6 weeks (September 1, 2020 to October 6, 2020).The Contractor shall remove the existing riprap and install the new armoring system from elevation 186.00 to elevation 190.00 in this 6 week period. The contractor shall not expose more than 6,500 sq.ft. of impervious embankment at a time, or as approved by the COR.  Phase II will include the removal of the existing riprap and installation of the new armoring system from elevation 190 to 205. Normal summer/winter pool levels will be operated during this phase of construction. The contractor shall not expose more than 20,200 sq.ft. of impervious embankment at a time, or as approved by the COR.Phase III will include the milling and overlay of pavements for the roads located on the facility and the final stabilization of the laydown areas.Additional challenges include getting riprap to the project site due to the closure of both Walter F. George Lock and George Andrews Lock.The industry day event will be held from 0900 - 14:00 ET on Thursday, July 25, 2019 at the Walter F. George Power House. The meeting will consist of a general session with a presentation on the project development, project status, and project schedule followed by an open discussion/feedback period (this session should last no more than one hour). After the general session, a site tour will be provided from 1000 to 1100. Additionally, individual 30 minute break out sessions will be held, at the request of the contractor, starting at 1200. Contractor comments and suggestions are strongly encouraged. The draft contract plans are provided as enclosures for additional project information. Contractors are required to bring their driver license, steel toe boots, and hard hat to industry day.The contract will be a firm fixed price, best value, "C" type award and it is scheduled for advertisement in late October 2019. Contract award is tentatively scheduled for February 2020 with a period of performance of approximately 12 months.
